The center of Granada capital did not always have its current modern image. In the 12th century it was a Hispanic Muslim commercial neighborhood. The surroundings of the Cathedral were then occupied by the Madraza, the Greater Mosque, the Alhóndiga Yiyida or silk market.
Discover the of Granada´s city center with our guided tour. We will start in Plaza de las Pasiegas, where the Cathedral of the Incarnation is located, built on the old Great Mosque by order of Queen Isabel the Catholic. Its construction lasted several centuries. Its main architects were Diego de Siloé and Alonso Cano, who gave the temple the finishing we see today.
We will continue along Calle Oficios to see the Royal Chapel that is just attached to the Cathedral. It is a charming Elizabethan Gothic-style building, where we can find the remains of the Catholic Monarchs, their daughter Juana I of Castilla and her husband Felipe de Habsburgo (the Beautiful), as well as the infant Miguel de Paz.
The sacristy houses the museum where part of the legacy of Isabel and Fernando is displayed: a collection of religious paintings from the Spanish, Flemish and Italian schools, including The Prayer in the Garden by Botticelli. Among the objects of the Catholic Monarchs collection, the crown of Queen Isabel, her scepter, books and other belongings of a more intimate nature are preserved.
