Details
The iconic Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See in Seville is also known as the Magna Hispalensis, as it is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world in terms of surface area.
It was built on top of an Almohad mosque, which was erected during the reign of Caliph Abu Yacub (1172-1198). When Ferdinand III reconquered Seville in 1248, it became a Christian cathedral without altering its structure: eight doors enclose the magnificent beauty and historical-artistic heritage of this temple.
It houses an art gallery with more than seven hundred works of art. It has the largest main altarpiece. Its excellent sculptures inside also deserve attention. It is of such importance that both Christopher Columbus and some Castilian kings are buried here: Alfonso X "the Wise" and Peter I "the Cruel".
Its famous Giralda tower was the former Almohad minaret. The complex has adapted over the years to various artistic styles. From Gothic to Mudéjar and Renaissance, to spectacular Baroque, and even parts were finished in the Neo-Gothic style. Making the Cathedral an impressive and unique monument, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the Royal Alcazar and the General Archive of the Indies. Additionally, on July 25, 2010, it was declared a Site of Outstanding Universal Value.
