Description

"El Guernica" is an artwork that Pablo Picasso painted in Paris between May and June 1937. Its title refers to the bombing that took place on April 26, 1937, in the Biscayan town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. The painting didn't arrive back in Spain until 1981, being exhibited first at the Casón del Buen Retiro and in 1992 at the Reina Sofía Museum, where it remains ever since.

The interpretation of this work has raised different opinions and debates, but they all have in common its artistic and historical value of those dark years in Spain. It has been considered an icon of the 20th century, a symbol of the suffering of the war. According to the critic Robert Hughes, "El Guernica" is "the last great historical painting".
