The history of flamenco zambras in Granada is rich and profound, beginning with the innovations of Antonio Torcuato “Cujón” and solidifying in Sacromonte with the Zambra de los Amayas. Manuel Amaya Hidalgo, known as "Manolo Amaya", was a key figure in spreading flamenco, performing at international events and collaborating with major flamenco artists. His legacy includes extensive participation in films and documentaries, as well as co-founding the Brotherhood of the "Christ of the Gypsies". His influence on music, dance, and the Gypsy culture of Granada is undeniable and continues to be celebrated after his death in 1977.
In 2001, Sensi Amaya revitalized "Reina Mora", renaming it "Tablao Flamenco Albayzín" and modernizing its programming while maintaining the traditional roots of flamenco. In 2017, she expanded her vision to Málaga with the "Tablao Los Amayas". In 2024, José and Manuel Amaya reopened the historic Cueva de los Amayas in Sacromonte, offering an authentic flamenco experience without amplification or elaborate stages, emphasizing the intimate connection between artists and audience. This initiative has revitalized the Granada zambra, ensuring that the Amaya legacy continues to inspire future generations and preserve the magic of flamenco in its most traditional setting.
